ABOUT LONG ISLAND

Long Island is located just east of Manhattan on the southeastern tip of New York State. Geographically, it is comprised of 4 counties; Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk. Locals consider Brooklyn and Queens as part of New York City and Nassau and Suffolk counties as Long Island.

A Bit of History

 1524 Italian Explorer Verrazano spots the South Shore
 1609 Henry Hudson lands on Long Island and claims it for the Dutch
 1639 Lion Gardiner is sold Gardiner's Island which is still owned by the family today
 1640 Southold and Southampton are the first settlements
 1664 Colonel Richard Nicolls sails his fleet to New York Bay and claims Long Island for England
 1668 The first race track is established on Long Island
 1776 The Battle of Long Island, the first import engagement of the American Revolution is won, in one day, by the British.
 1796 Lighthouse at Montauk is NY's first coastal beacon
 1909 July 17, Glenn Curtiss arrives on LI and LI becomes the "Cradle of American Aviation."
 1922 First trans-Atlantic radio telephone transmitter at Rocky Point
 1926 Lindbergh takes off at Roosevelt Field on first non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean to Paris
 1939 Pan American commercial air service to Europe from Port Washington
 1940 LI becomes major center for war production
 1947 Brookhaven National Laboratory is opened to study peaceful uses of atomic energy
 1969 July 20, The Lunar Module, designed by Grumman Corporation, lands on the moon.
 2004 New York Product Testing & Services Inc moves into their new, modern, air-conditioned facility.
